TMJ Assessment
I focus on helping patients and clinicians understand jaw joint conditions
In my experience, jaw joint (TMJ) symptoms can sometimes be overlooked during routine examinations. I've found that patients may experience several symptoms, including:
- Discomfort in the jaw area
- Headaches
- Episodes of dizziness
- Ear-related symptoms
- Changes in hearing
I believe in carefully considering how the jaw joint and teeth work together. Changes in dental alignment can affect jaw function, and I try to help identify any underlying joint issues before treatment begins.
If you think you have a TMJ problem I would, after careful questioning, arrange an MRi scan of the temporomandibular joints which I would review before any consultation. If you have already had a scan, I would review that scan first. I would like to point out that the scans performed in centres which do not see a lot of TMJ patients can be non-diagnostic, and a repeat scan may occasionally be necessary.
Once I have confirmed the diagnosis I will arrange a consultation, during which I will explain the issues and try give you your treatment options. I would then refer you to the most appropriate specialist.
